At the University of Purdue they have developed a new technology concept that could give pet control companies a better way to control termites in the future. The way that the new technology works is by finding, and destroying the termite’s resistance genes that aid in the insects ability to fight of fungus. Termites without this ability to fight fungus are extremely vulnerable, and will be much easier to control.

Michael Scharf an associate professor at the Purdue Department of Entomology had this to say about the new technology and termites. “Termites damage approximately 600,000 homes in the U.S. each year,” he went on to say “Understanding the small, wood-destroying insect’s biology and behavior can lead to more effective methods that are specifically targeted at termites to control infestation, prevent damage and potentially decrease the insects’ spread.” That is what lead Michael to look into the ideal of using fungus against the termites.

The new technology developed at the University of Purdue still needs to be tested on a broader scale but the results are promising.
